When I was in middle school, my best friend treated me like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I figured out exactly how sexist it was, and I had to constantly remind him and myself that I'm not a manic pixie dream girl. They're not real! In this animatic video, I talk about my experiences being treated like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl through middle school and high school, and how it all played out. If you can relate to my story, then I promise you, you can be the main character for your own story, you don't need to serve as a supporting character to anyone who tells you you are.
If you want to watch some amazing movies NOT about Manic Pixie Dream Girls, but in fact take a hard look at the trope and show us what's wrong with it, Check these out!
500 Days Of Summer - An often misunderstood gem of a movie
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - A movie that came BEFORE the term was even coined yet so perfectly talked about how damaging it is to treat girls like a Manic Pixie Dream Girl
Ruby Sparks - an almost horror story look at why its wrong to try to control a girl into being their dream girl, until mercifully, they're allowed to be themselves in the end
Movies from the 2000s who made this trope famous are likely not meant to be menacing or controlling and meant only to tell love stories, and its fine to enjoy them. But its important to allow other voices to still be heard too. 'Quirky' girls who don't deserve to be lumped into this tope because they do have their own story to tell. That being said, there are also Manic Pixie Dream Boys, also completely harmless, especially since there are plenty of other stories told by not manic pixie dream boys to balance it out. I just want the same for their female counterparts. To assign such a label to a character, or a real life person, its to shrink them down to "ah, my real life movie is about to begin, because this girl stepped into my life" and...well that isn't fair, is it?
